CryptoAngels: Gabriel

The last in a series of posts about the Archangels of the CryptoAngels project and their inspirations.

Owned by Schmrypto, Gabriel is an impassive observer of the Multiverse. He monitors the events that shape existence from his throne at the top of the Aquiline Tower at the summit of Heaven’s Mons Divinus – the great mountain on which Michael’s Palace of Light also stands. The main inspiration for Gabriel was the character of Metron from Jack Kirby’s New Gods comics. Like Gabriel, Metron is an emotionally cool, powerful yet passive being, who is usually depicted as seated and is devoted to the acquisition of knowledge.

Gabriel commands the Convocation of a Billion Eagles, who fly out across the Multiverse gathering knowledge to bring back to the Archangel. This concept is inspired by the ravens Huginn and Muninn of Norse mythology, who perform a similar service for the god Odin. The Eagle, Gabriel’s constellation, has long been associated with divinity and majesty. It was sacred to Jupiter, the king of the Roman gods. Legions of the ancient Roman army each carried an aquila – an eagle emblem on a pole – this inspired Gabriel’s Standard of the Silver Eagle.

This exploration of Gabriel completes our rollcall of the Archangels. Interested parties may wish to consider further the role of this enigmatic, all-seeing sentinel angel in the light of Trevor’s subsequent EXPOS3D project and its cryptic numen LOGOS.
