CryptoAngels: Camael

The twentieth in a series of posts about the Archangels of the CryptoAngels project and their inspirations.

Owned by the Creator Trevor Jones, the warrior angel Camael is among the most active of his kind. He does not wait to be summoned but goes straight to the Multiverse’s zones of conflict and fights alongside mortal warriors, taking the side that has most courage and virtue. He is inspired by mythical gods of war, such as the Greek Ares, the Roman Mars, and the Norse Odin. The battlefields mentioned – Troy, Stalingrad, Zeta-6 – represent myth, reality, and fiction, showing the range of influences behind the Archangels. The reference to the Powers of the Light viewing mortals as figurines on a gameboard is an allusion to the way that gods are sometimes depicted playing a cosmic game in films such as Jason and the Argonauts and Clash of the Titans and in Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series.

Camael’s mount and companion is the golden-fleeced ram Aries. It is inspired by Chrysomallos, a fabulous flying ram of Greek mythology, whose golden fleece was hung from an oak in the grove of the war god Ares and was later the object of the hero Jason’s quest.

The resurrection of the mightiest heroes on the day of the Eschaton is inspired by Norse mythology. The Norsemen believed that slain warriors went to Valhalla, Odin’s Hall of Heroes, where they prepared to fight alongside the gods in the final battle of Ragnarök.
