CryptoAngels: Sachiel

The eleventh in a series of posts about the Archangels of the CryptoAngels project and their inspirations.

Owned by The Dogecoin Family, Sachiel is a very important figure in the CryptoAngels cosmology. He traverses the whole Multiverse on its many-branching celestial streams, helping interdimensional travellers cross safely from one World to another. The colour of Sachiel’s aura is aqua, and his boat the Aquamarine is named after the gemstone of that name and colour. His is the only constellation not named after an animal or mythical creature – instead it is Eridanus, the name of the cosmic river that he traverses. Sachiel’s role as boatman echoes a time before roads, when rivers were people’s main channels of transport. From neolithic times, settlements have been founded beside rivers, and waterways have been used for trade and travel.

An inspiration for Sachiel is Charon, the ferryman of Greek mythology who carried the souls of those who died across the river Styx to their afterlife in the underworld, though he occasionally ferried living mortals too, such as Heracles and Orpheus. Sachiel’s description also touches on the foretold Eschaton. The account of rising waters echoes many apocalyptic scenarios, such as the Biblical Great Flood, the world’s return to the Sea of Chaos in Egyptian mythology, and contemporary concerns about global warming.
