The paintings for my forthcoming exhibition, Synaesthesia II, have been inspired and informed by songs of contemporary Scottish bands and singers. There is a long history of both scientists and artists attempting to establish a connection between music and colour; however, while no meaningful relationship has been measured this hasn't hindered the creation of artworks that are still stimulating, insightful, challenging or simply beautiful and engaging. My current paintings are not an attempt to 'make right' where others 'went wrong'. This exhibition is, to some extent, a tribute to those past artists who, like me, were inspired by the phenomenon and complexity of colour and its transcendental connection with music. I hope you enjoy the work.
"Colour is a power which directly influences the soul. Colour is the keyboard, the eyes are the hammer, the soul is the strings. The artist is the hand that plays, touching one key or another, to cause vibrations in the soul"
Wassily Kandinsky, Concerning the Spiritual in Art, 1911
Trevor Jones paints with a remarkable awareness and sincerity, layering 'sensations', which are built up with paint and various other media as he responds intuitively to the world around him. Working in a unique, free flowing manner, incorporating rhythms and patterns, text and textures, the paintings evolve until the essence of the subject matter contemplated reveals itself. Both challenging and rewarding, each piece is approached individually yet a powerful coherency threads its way through his very distinctive style.
